Combat Mechanics
Master the brutal hand-to-hand brawling system. Learn about environmental warfare, the Adrenaline system, and how to survive overwhelming odds.
Samson’s combat is defined by its brutal, grounded realism. There are no guns, no explosives, and no stylized stealth takedowns. Every fight is a desperate, physical struggle for survival where mistakes are heavily punished.
Core Philosophy
The developers deliberately avoided the rhythmic combo systems of games like Batman: Arkham or Marvel’s Spider-Man. Instead, fights in Samson are:
- Slow and deliberate
- Weighted and physical
- Punishing for mistakes
- Dependent on environmental adaptation
Enemy attacks deal significant, permanent damage to your health bar. There’s no health regeneration—you must use expensive painkillers (brand name “Tyndenol”) to heal.
Basic Combat Actions
Attack Types
| Action | Description | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Light Attack | Quick punches | Low damage, fast recovery, build combos |
| Heavy Attack | Powerful strikes | High damage, slow recovery, breaks guards |
| Charged Attack | Hold to charge | Even more damage, leaves you vulnerable |
Defensive Options
| Action | Description | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Parry | Perfect timing block | Staggers enemies, conserves stamina |
| Dodge | Roll to evade | Costs stamina, i-frames on startup |
| Block | Hold to block | Reduces damage but doesn’t negate |
Critical Tip: Attempting to initiate a sprinting melee attack will almost always result in a miss. The game requires your character to be standing completely still to accurately register a strike against an opponent’s hitbox.
Environmental Warfare
The environment is your greatest weapon. Samson can use almost any loose object as a blunt instrument:
Scavengeable Weapons
- Steel pipes
- Baseball bats
- Discarded blades
- Heavy wrenches
Environmental Kills
- Push enemies over steep railings
- Shove them into brick walls
- Collapse objects onto attackers (stacked tires, brick piles)
Trunk Storage
Before entering tough encounters, you can store one high-tier melee weapon in your car’s trunk and retrieve it before kicking in a door.
The Adrenaline System
When surrounded by multiple enemies, survival requires mastering the Adrenaline economy:
How It Works
- Fill the Gauge: Take physical damage and land heavy strikes
- Trigger Rush: Activate when gauge is full
- Heightened State: Massive amplification of aggressive power
- Break Guards: Easily dispatch enemies that were previously blocking
This system incentivizes high-risk, hyper-aggressive play when cornered—transforming pain into tactical advantage.
Adrenaline Shots
- Found in the environment
- Can be purchased to manually spike the meter
- Essential for truly desperate encounters
Damage Persistence
Samson’s physical state reflects combat:
- Dark bruises appear on his model
- Bleeding cuts persist across the game world
- Torn clothing shows the toll of battle
These don’t disappear until you stop to heal using Tyndenol painkillers—adding another layer of resource management.
Enemy Types and Tactics
| Enemy Type | Characteristics | Counter |
|---|---|---|
| Street Thugs | Basic melee, low health | Light combos, environmental kills |
| Gang Enforcers | Higher health, better blocking | Heavy attacks, parry more |
| Debt Collectors | ”Punctuation” units, extremely dangerous | Adrenaline Rush, escape recommended |
| Police Officers | Escalating response, numbers | Vehicle pursuit, lose them fast |
Combat Statistics (Per Enemy)
| Stat | Description |
|---|---|
| Health | Damage required to defeat |
| Stagger Threshold | Damage needed to interrupt attacks |
| Block Efficiency | Damage reduction when blocking |
| Attack Speed | Wind-up time before strikes |
Tips for Success
- Patience Over Aggression: Unlike most action games, button-mashing gets you killed
- Learn Parry Windows: Perfect parries are game-changing
- Use the Environment: Pipes and bottles deal more damage than fists
- Manage Stamina: Dodging too much leaves you exhausted
- Adrenaline is Life: Getting hit actually helps when adrenaline is near full
- Heal Strategically: Tyndenol is expensive—don’t waste it on scrapes
Skill Tree Synergies
Your combat effectiveness is heavily influenced by your Skill Tree investments:
- Tactics: More health, better survival
- Aggression: Higher damage, faster guard breaks
- Instinct: Faster Adrenaline buildup and longer Rush duration
- Cunning: Better parry windows, situational awareness
